In Friendica, tags and categories serve different purposes for organizing and finding content:
Tags: - Are typically added by users when creating posts - Use a hashtag format (e.g. #technology, #photography) - Can be clicked to see other posts with the same tag across the network - Help in discovering content on specific topics - Are more granular and specific
Categories: - Are usually predefined by the Friendica instance administrator - Group content into broader topics - Often appear as a dropdown menu or list when creating posts - Help organize content within a specific Friendica instance - Are generally broader and less numerous than tags
While both help in content organization, tags are more user-driven and network-wide, whereas categories are typically instance-specific and used for broader classification. However, the exact implementation can vary somewhat between different Friendica instances.
---
But IDK this doesn't seem right, for instance this instance does not seem to have pre-defined categories.
Tags are built into friendica; categories are a plugin I enabled because I wasn't sure what they were, but it seems like they're basically "tags that aren't in the main text and that get a different little profile widget".
